Bárbara González

Volunteer of Hostelling International Slovenia

Chilean journalist, specialist in International Relations, enthusiastic cook and baker, rookie gardener, frustrated professional swimmer, retired Tango dancer, red wine drinker, cheese eater, horror movie fan and travel lover. A remarkable thing of her is that every year, she celebrates New Year's Eve in a city she hasn´t been there before.

The first travel in her family was done by her grand-grandparents from her father side, which moved from Palestine to Chile early in the XX Century, escaping the ottoman Empire.

But how did she end up in Europe? She was not escaping from something, but chasing someone: She met this wonderful German guy she knew he was “the one”. After 18 months of a long-distance relationship and meeting in person just every 5 months, she moved to Germany in 2011. Since 2013 they are happily married, proving that long-distance-and-intercultural relationships are not only possible, but happy-end likely.

She has lived in Santiago (Chile), Konstanz (Germany), New York (United States), and now in the Austrian city of Graz, where she earns money as International Exchange Student Advisor at the TU Graz. I say “earn money” because that´s not her job: her job is to travel and discover the world.
