A View of Lake Constance

Content
As early as several thousand years ago, people were first drawn to Lake Constance. In the Neolithic and Bronze Ages (ca. 4,000 – 850 BC) the first stilt houses were erected in the water. Today, these houses – in reconstructed form – can be visited. In the typical houses with thatched roofs, visitors can get to know the world of the early farmers, fishermen and merchants of Lake Constance. The museum also allows touching the tools of everyday life with the help of replicas and original findings from excavations, a fascinating, sunken world emerges back into view.

Lake Constance is situated in the northern Alpine foothills and is fed by the Rhine. Its borders belong to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Active visitors are presented with a great variety of leisure-time opportunities. Signposted cycle paths lead the way along the shore, you can sail or paddle by canoe, or take a stroll along one of the many hiking trails. Churches and monasteries, castles and fortresses, picturesque historic districts and unique views of the alpine panorama are among the notable attractions of the region. The mild climate allows for fruit and vegetables to grow sumptuously, local wines prosper, and the freshly caught fish is a known favourite.

Travellers visiting Lake Constance today come upon significantly more comfortable conditions than people did in prehistoric times. Just recently, the Youth Hostel Überlingen was modernised completely. During breakfast in the cafeteria, guests enjoy a panoramic view of the lake. The youth hostel is only 100 metres off the shore. As of now, the building is mostly accessible for people with impairments and can accommodate up to 240 guests. All rooms are equipped with a shower and toilet.

Active visitors can use the sports hall, ping-pong tables or the sports ground. Also available are a disco room, a bistro, Wi-Fi, a video projector and a flat screen monitor. Moreover, the building underwent an energy saving refurbishment and now consumes only one third of the energy required beforehand.

Überlingen boasts the longest waterside promenade in Germany. The most famous sights – like the island of Mainau with its many flowers, the Meersburg castle, the baroque church of Birnau as well as the Zeppelin Museum of Friedrichshafen are only a few kilometres away. By boat, you can take a trip to Austria or Switzerland. In short: Lake Constance offers everything a perfect holiday needs.
