Red is the dominant colour for Stralsund’s churches, abbeys, monasteries, town hall and municipal buildings. The red bricks are genuine works of art. Here are the abbeys in all their tranquillity, and the Rügen Bridge which connects the northern part of mainland Germany to its largest island.



Anyone who loves historical architecture will feel right at home in Stralsund’s old town at the Baltic Sea. Even the view of Stralsund from above is spectacular. You will see how houses are close together, wall upon wall and in between three churches. St. Mary’s, St. Nikolas’ and St. James’ are impressive monuments that bearing witness to Stralsund’s former wealth and status.

In the Middle Ages, maritime trade shaped the fate of merchants, often bringing unprecedented wealth and prosperity. Stralsund was once an important trading and transshipment hub of the Hanseatic League. Later, two department-store giants would open their first stores here. And today, the city is an attractive shopping location, offering a wide range of products and services. Stralsund’s Town Hall is also a popular place to take a stroll and window-shop. Whether you have a passion for ships, fish or history, Stralsund’s museums are much more than a place to stay dry on a rainy day. Just a hop, skip and jump apart, the Museum of Cultural History attracts visitors with its gold treasure of Hiddensee, the Oceanographic Museum (Meeresmuseum) and OZEANEUM fascinate guests with their awe-inspiring aquariums, and Marine Museum on the small island of Dänholm tells thrilling tales of adventure.

This time, even more guests – including wheelchair users – are able to explore this city with its own character. The Youth Hostel has two new buildings, both are near the water and both with a complete access for the disabled. All 18 four-bedded rooms have sanitary facilities. 





Swimming, paddling, windsurfing, sailing water fun begins at the doorstep here. The beach can also be reached with wheelchairs. Stralsund Youth Hostel is located in the city's Devin district, and has its own bathing beach on the Sund. Roundabout the hostel, there's lots to discover for inquisitive minds. The Ozeanum and German maritime museum (also with access for disabled) beckon you to discover the offshore habitat under the surface of the water.
