Discover hip & historic Ghent

Content
Lonely Planet calls it “Europe’s best kept secret of Europe”. National Geographic Traveler Magazine places it third in its global ranking of authentic destinations. Who are we to disagree?  Ghent is definitely worth a visit and will surprise you in so many ways.

Stroll around in the cobbled streets, stare at the amazing architectures, visit the impressive Castle of the Counts or one of the fantastic museums … Nowhere else they zap you from the fourteenth century to the twenty-first century, and back! Yet, Ghent is also hip and trendy, with its many shopping streets, fancy restaurants, pubs and bustling night life.

Hidden gem
One of the hidden gems of this city is The Prinsenhof, the place where Charles V was born in 1500 and the place where you can lay your head to rest in HI hostel “De Draecke”. Located in the medieval heart, you are really in one of the best spots for exploring Ghent. The Castle of the Counts is just around the corner and other hotspots are within walking distance. Yet, the neighbourhood is quiet with the canal and relaxing weeping willows right next to you when you wake up.

Complete makeover
At the end of 2014, the hostel was closed for drastic renovations. After 21 years of intensive use, the hostel could use a complete makeover. On August 28 2015, the hostel officially reopened and the result is impressive.

When you enter the hostel, you are welcomed by some happy figures, including a green dragon, referring to the name of the hostel. The graffiti painting is made by the street artist Bué The Warrior, whose colourful creations can be found all over the world. The reception is integrated in the bar and it is connected with the dining room and lounge. There’s a computer corner and free wifi. There is a large meeting room which can also be used as a dining room for big groups. The bedrooms are completely redecorated and fitted with new en suite bathrooms.

So go on, put trendy vibrant Ghent on your bucket list and come check out the renewed hostel!
