Silkeborg, Denmark’s Hidden Treasure

Content
Most tourists are familiar with Copenhagen as a popular city in Denmark, but there is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. It is the breathtakingly beautiful city of Silkeborg.

Silkeborg is considered the ‘lake district of Denmark’ and has some of the cleanest swimming lakes. There is beauty to be seen everywhere. Hans Christian Andersen expressed in writing the spectacular beauty of the city, with its hills, lakes and river system, forests, wildlife, and culture – ‘the loveliness of everything.’  While Denmark is mostly flat, Silkeborg is one of the hilliest areas and this ultimately adds to its charm.  Places such as Himmelbjerg (Sky Mountain) can be seen from a distance, or can be reached by walking, driving, or sailing. The lakes and river system links the city and allows for kayaking, canoeing and sailing. The heaths and woodlands in Silkeborg are some of the largest outdoor and forested areas, with a variety of flora and fauna, and fabulous opportunities for exploration.

The cultural aspects of Silkeborg are quite diverse and include the River Boat Jazz Festival, a Latin Quarter, works by local artisans at museums, galleries, or special exhibitions, Asger Jorn’s famous collections at Museum Jorn, and Silkeborg Museum which features the preserved bodies of the ‘Tollund Man’ and the ‘Elling Woman’found in a peat bog in Denmark.

Golfing, geocaching, fishing, sailing, swimming, biking and hiking, are just some of the many outdoor activities which can be enjoyed whether you are alone or with family or friends.  Hjejlen, a paddle steamer, provides fantastic views of Silkeborg as it sails on the lakes and Guden River.

Danhostel Silkeborg is located in the middle of Silkeborg on the Guden River, with a jetty which provides access to canoes and kayaks.  It is close to all the major activities and amenities, and just 400 m from the bus and train station.  The hostel has 26 rooms, 20 of which are en-suite, and offers free parking and internet.  Homemade meals, breads and desserts - mostly organic - are prepared in house in ‘Åkøk’net.’  Danhostel Silkeborg offers a combination of city life and nature, and is open until December 1, 2015.
