Denmark has over 400 islands and about 70 of them are inhabited. Most people are familiar with Zealand, because of the beautiful Copenhagen. Funen is also well known because its capital city, Odense, is the birthplace of Denmark’s famous fairytale writer, Hans Christian Andersen.  Other islands, such as Bornholm, Samsø, and Læsø, are well known for granite coastlines, extended hours of sunshine, tourism, windmills, salt and potatoes.

The island of Langeland, located between the islands of Lolland and Funen, is a beautiful island with fantastic scenery, forests and beaches.  It is a long, narrow island with hills, wild Exmoor horses and beautiful birds. Rudkøbing is the largest city on Langeland and offers exciting boat trips, cycling, sailing, diving, riding, golf, swimming and other activities.

There are many attractions on Langeland.  Langeland Fort, now part of the Cold War Museum, was once a part of Denmark’s defence during the Cold War.  A visit to the museum highlights the significance of the fort during the war, and focuses on the submarine, minesweeper, airplanes and bunkers which were utilised.

Skovsgård Manor House is worth a visit. Take a trip to the museum in the basement, take a look at the workshop of the nature, and see how people lived and worked in cramped surroundings at the Manor House.  A stroll through the beautiful park behind the house is worth a visit.

Danhostel Langeland is located in a beautiful rural area in the city of Rudkøbing, and is a Danhostel together with 82 hostels in Denmark. This cosy, newly renovated hostel with its tranquil atmosphere, is only 250 metres from the walking street, restaurants and marina.  It is a 3 star hostel with 9 rooms and 5 apartments.  There is a camping area with room for 35 campers. Danhostel Langeland is a great starting point for trips to the island of Funen, which is linked to Langeland by Langeland Bridge.

A trip to Langeland should be high on your wish list.
